The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba phenomenon has done it again. The first film in the Infinity Castle trilogy, titled Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Akaza's Return, is not only breaking box office records but is already positioning itself as one of the most successful films in the history of Japanese cinema. In just 17 days, the film has grossed over 17 billion yen. This surpasses all-time records and further cements the franchise's dominance in global pop culture.
An unstoppable box office with records and million-dollar figures

Since its release on July 18, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle – Akaza's Return has proven to be a huge success. In just 17 days, it sold over 12.5 million tickets and accumulated a total box office takings of 17,639,557,600 yen, equivalent to $119.3 million. This feat allowed it to enter the select group of the Top 10 highest-grossing films in history in Japan, displacing Bayside Shakedown 2 (2003) from tenth place.
But that's not all. The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle film also broke the record for the fastest film to reach 10 billion yen, achieving this milestone in just eight days. Thus, it surpassed its predecessor, Mugen Train, which had reached that mark in 10 days during its historic 2020 release.
The start was devastating. On opening day, Infinity Castle sold over 1.15 million tickets and generated $11.1 million. On July 20, it broke a daily box office record by earning $13.7 million in a single day. Furthermore, its first long weekend (four days) generated a total box office gross of $49.5 million, far surpassing the three-day opening of Mugen Train ($43.8 million).
Will Infinity Castle be able to surpass the great icons of anime?

While already a runaway hit, Infinity Castle still has a way to go if it wants to climb higher on the list of highest-grossing films. Up next are landmark titles like Howl's Moving Castle (19.6 billion), Princess Mononoke (20.18 billion), One Piece: Red (20.33 billion), and Your Name (25.17 billion). At the top is the unattainable Spirited Away with 31.68 billion yen, and at the top of the podium is Mugen Train, with its 40.43 billion yen in Japan and a global total that makes it the highest-grossing Japanese film.
With the momentum it's building, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle – Akaza's Return could continue to climb the all-time ranking. The passion of its fans, the solidity of its narrative, and the power of its animation continue to fuel this global phenomenon. If one thing has become clear, it's that the Kimetsu no Yaiba universe hasn't reached its peak yet, and the Infinity Castle is just beginning to unleash its power.
