The Four Cardinal Heroes are ordinary men of modern-day Japan, summoned to the kingdom of Melromarc to confront the dreaded Waves of Catastrophe, events that have devastated the land for centuries.
Each hero wields a legendary weapon: sword, spear, bow, and shield. Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku, takes on the role of the Shield Hero. His companions and the kingdom quickly despise him for his poor offensive prowess and uncharismatic personality.
When he sets out with the only person willing to accompany him, Malty Melromarc, she betrays him and makes a false accusation against him, which causes him to be completely rejected by the village. With his heart filled with rage and distrust, Naofumi decides to become stronger on his own.
To avoid facing his mission alone, he acquires Raphtalia, a demi-human slave on the brink of death, who becomes his loyal companion. Together, they will fight to protect Melromarc from the destruction brought by the Waves.
