Within the complex world of science fiction, there is a subgenre who has left behind some of the most important futuristic (and sometimes also visionary) works of all time. We are talking about cyberpunk, created practically by the writer William Gibson and his mythical work Neuromancerin which inventions such as the Internet or virtual reality were decades ahead.
However, it was cinema that managed to give cyberpunk, with its androids and neon lights, a definitive form.
Much of the blame lies with the originally misunderstood Blade Runner, but also some animated productions that faithfully reflected this world. Perhaps the most important of all is about to disappear from Amazon Prime Video.
A science fiction classic ahead of its time
The influence of the anime movie Ghost in the Shell There is no doubt about it. The legendary work of Mamoru Oshii, inspired in turn by the manga of Masamune Shirow, has served to carry out a bunch of sequels (both comics and animation), successful television series, and even a live-action movie starring Scarlett Johansson.
Even major Hollywood directors have acknowledged their interest in this Japanese work, such as James Cameron. Undoubtedly another of the great names associated with cyberpunk thanks in part to the saga Terminator. But it is fair to acknowledge that probably without Ghost in the Shell There would be no films of the stature of Matrixwhich is clearly inspired by her.
The film's protagonist, Major Mokoto Kusanagi, is a mysterious cyborg with a mysterious past, who leads a secret section in charge of dealing with all kinds of cyber threats. In addition, Mamoru Oshii's work addresses all kinds of philosophical debates about what life, identity and being human are in a digital world.
Considering that Ghost in the Shell First released in theaters in the mid-90s, it's easy to see how this anime film was years ahead of current issues, such as cyberterrorism, online scams, or implants in human beings (yes, like what Elon Musk and his uncertain company Neuralink are trying to do).
Last chance to see the legendary Ghost in the Shell
August 23rd will be the last day to see Ghost in the Shell on Amazon Prime Video (or to enjoy it again if you already did). And you have to admit that, despite the many other installments this series has had, this first anime film is the fundamental key to understanding everything else (even above the manga on which it is based, although that is also recommended).
Also, even though I'm almost 30 years old, Ghost in the Shell It continues to surprise us with its enormous visual quality, even today. The film proves like few others that quality animation knows how to age. And if not, just try it out: search, compare and try to find something better… if you can.
