Netflix has revealed the development of a new stop-motion animated series starring two of Sanrio's most beloved characters: My Melody and Kuromi. Titled “My Melody & Kuromi,” the series will be produced by WIT STUDIO, known for its work on hit titles such as “SPY x FAMILY,” “Attack on Titan,” and “Vinland Saga.” This production marks a special tribute to the 50 years of My Melody and the 20 years of Kuromi, with a premiere scheduled for July 2025.
The series will take viewers on a journey through Mariland, the characters' charming home, and promises to deliver an exciting story with visual elements that explore the limits of stop-motion. Netflix has already released a special teaser showing the characters in their animated form, raising fans' anticipation.
The project is led by Tomoki Misatoknown for his work in “Pui Pui Molcar“, who expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration: «I'm excited for this project to finally be announced in such an important year, celebrating 50 years of My Melody and 20 years of Kuromi. This project motivated us all to face various challenges and take stop-motion to the next level. I hope you all enjoy this exciting story set in our hand-crafted Mariland, with vibrant action and lovable, dynamic characters.».
The animation team is led by Toruku, a WIT STUDIO production line established in 2020. Writer Shuko Nemoto is also part of the creative team, highlighting the significance of writing dialogue for such iconic characters. Nemoto reflected on the development process, which spanned several years due to pandemic restrictions: “Due to the pandemic, I was not able to meet in person with director Misato or the producers, but we connected weekly remotely to carefully build this project full of love for the world of My Melody. I think both adults and children will find favorite scenes and dialogues in this story».

“My Melody & Kuromi” joins a growing list of Netflix productions inspired by Sanrio characters, such as “Aggretsuko” and “Gudetama: An Eggcellent Adventure“. The platform has also recently opted for stop-motion with “Pokemon Concierge“, which will have a second season. This phenomenon reflects the popularity of mascots as the basis for animated adaptations, including examples such as “Chiikawa” in HIDIVE and “Banana” on Crunchyroll. Additionally, WIT STUDIO's sister company, Production IG, announced last October a series of Rilakkuma.
