The very long -awaited film “The Rose of Versailles”, produced by Mappa, began with a lot of expectation, but it seems to be unnoticed after a few days on the billboard. At the end of January, the film, which celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of the manga, made its debut with a decent opening on its first day, reaching 8 at the box office with 20 million yen. However, what seemed like a good beginning disinflating quickly.

Despite having an incredible team behind, including the Mappa studio, the composer Hiroyuki Sawano and the voice of Miyuki Sawashiro as Oscar François de Jarjayes, the public's response was not expected. By the end of the first weekend, the film had fallen to 9th place, with only 85 million collected yen. And the thing doesn't look good.

Some users in networks have not hesitated to express their disappointment. One of them commented: «I just saw that in his first weekend he was in 9th place and raised less than 100 million. What a bomb!». Another added: «Remakes really don't go well». Although some fans mentioned that the film was not so bad, many wonder why a work long expected by so many, and backed by Mappa, failed to attract more public.

One of the most commented points was that the script failed to convey the story correctly, and some felt lost. «They do not explain why Oscar dresses as a man, so many people who do not know the story end up seeing her as a strong woman who lives as she wants, when it is not that». Instead of approaching the fans of the manga or new spectators, many simply did not feel connected to the film.

As if that were not enough, the promotion was not up to it either. «With how popular the manga was, they did not even make good promotion on TV». Others point out that although the film was surrounded by Hype, Mappa did not know how to capitalize on all that potential: «They spent the same money on promotion as in Chainsaw Man, why do they always bet everything and fail?».

It seems that fans were not prepared to see a remake of this classic, and many suggest that nostalgia for the original version is something that cannot be easily replicated. «It is impossible to overcome the original, although we had all the money in the world». Others say that doing a remake is a risk that almost always ends in failure, especially when you try to relive something so dear to many.

So, although the animation is impressive and has a luxury team, “The Rose of Versailles” failed to deal with nostalgia and love for the original version. The big question now is whether the film will find some streaming success or if it will vanite themselves as other projects that tried to revive old classics. What do you think? Do you curious or let it pass?
