As usual, Twitter never ceases to surpriseand this time Internet users dusted off news that was as unusual as it was controversial: In 2007, the Chinese government banned Tibetan monks from reincarnating without official permission. Yes, you read that right, the Chinese state, known to be officially atheist, imposed regulations on the reincarnation process.

According to documents released by the State Administration of Religious Affairs, the new rules were an attempt to “institutionalize the management of reincarnation.” However, upon further analysis critics realized that it was a move calculated to reduce the influence of the Dalai Lama, the political leader of Tibet, who has lived in exile in India since 1959.
This measure prepared the so-called “Post-Dalai Era”, since the leader himself stated that he will not be born again in any region under the control of China. This, curiously, could generate a future conflict between “dalai lamas”: one selected by Tibetan monks and another appointed by the Chinese government through the Golden Urn method, which had little been used until now.
Although it may seem like fake news to you, it is not. In fact, China has continued to tighten regulations on reincarnation ever since. In November 2021, Chinese officials visited Tibet to review “managed reincarnation” policies. If Tibet follows the directions and local leaders and monks study the new laws, the Chinese Communist Party promises its full support.

However, all this comes with bad news. Tibetan monks are now under the control of China, meaning even the most basic spiritual decisions are subject to the control of the Chinese government. And the objective is clear, when the current Dalai Lama passes away, the Chinese authorities already have the groundwork prepared to impose a successor and take full control of the region. Did you think it was a joke?
And of course, as we mentioned at the beginning, the news was rediscovered by Internet users on Twitter:
- «Don’t fuck with me, China, how can I tell you if I’m reincarnated?».
- «It’s probably to avoid guys who claim to be the reincarnation of Mao or a Buddha.».
- «When you are about to meet her, you write a piece of paper and send it to the nearest municipality. If you do not die in the next 24 hours, you have to renew the permit».
- «Pipipi, there will be no more: “I am reincarnated in another world, I cannot level up, but I inherited the powers of God”».
- «The Chinese Communist Party, as an atheistic party, does not believe in such a thing (reincarnation), but they know very well that the practice is used so that new young people are taken to Buddhist monasteries to replace deceased lamas. They make sure the new lama is loyal to the government».
- «Under their logic, it means that they do not see it as impossible and, therefore, perhaps they have future programs or they already have them for when that happens (it’s quite funny XD)».
- «I feel like it could benefit from context: the ban on time travel is only in movies, because they fuel subversive thoughts. And reincarnation is only forbidden to Buddha; you can reincarnate without problems. Every day, Disparos Unidos and China become more similar».
- «There must be an office before going to the afterlife, and there your spirit must do the paperwork to request reincarnation, I imagine.».
- «How do they even find you when you reincarnate?».
- «They are Chinese and they are very cultural, so their basis is rebirth.».
- «It’s very funny when they have to adapt series about reincarnation and they distort the entire work to pretend that it never happened».
- «A wise man once said, “For the government to impose meaningless rules suggests how decadent it will be,” or something like that.».
- «I understand that it is specifically to punish the Dalai Lama, since he, in theory, is constantly reincarnated. So, with that law, they can arrest him as soon as he is named».
- «It’s just that you have to fill out the relevant documents before reincarnating, a matter of taxation and shit. Do not go to evade taxes to the Treasury».
- «I am very sure that they wrote that law only to screw the Indians in some way. I don’t know how nor do I know the content of the law, but that must be what it is for».
- «Come on, I can no longer be a vending machine in another world or the villain of my favorite video game.».
- «Imagine being reincarnated in a fantasy world and being chased by the Chinese State with all its military power».
- «It is designed to regulate Buddhist sects, among others. You know, they prevent the reincarnation of the leader of a group from being chosen without them being able to choose. You know, the Dalai Lama».
