The 101st Tokyo-Hakone Intercollegiate Ekiden, one of the most iconic university relay competitions in Japantook place on January 3, 2025, with 21 teams participating in the return leg (fukuro) connecting Hakone and Tokyo through five sections spanning 109.6 kilometers. However, beyond the impressive performance of the athletes, a peculiar group once again stole the public's attention: the iconic “Freezer Gundan.”

This group, known for dressing up as Frieza, the famous villain from the “Dragon Ball” series, performed once again in the seventh section, on the Oshikirizaka slope in Ninomiya. Their presence has already become an unbreakable tradition for fans of the event. Accompanied by the peculiar “Shakeeza”, dressed as sushi, they encouraged the runners with their characteristic enthusiasm. On this occasion, they surprised viewers by dancing to the rhythm of the hit song “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” by Creepy Nuts, which swept 2024.

On social networks, the reactions were immediate. Comments like:
- «Frieza has arrived! This is already part of the Hakone Ekiden».
- «See Frieza on the broadcast means my New Year is complete».
- «¡Frieza-sama is here again! It's a relief to see it after so many years.».
- «This year they came too, hahaha».
- «It's the first time I've seen it in real time this year, hahaha».
Many spectators highlighted the longevity of the group, which has been entertaining the public for more than 10 years. Furthermore, others expressed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Freezer Gundan” stopped its activities, which further increased the public's appreciation for its return. While much of the audience celebrates the group's presence, some question whether it is appropriate for their show to draw so much attention:
- «The spotlight should be on the runners, not on the extravagant costumes».
- «Despite everything, these fans cheer with respect and passion, much more than others who only carry advertising banners.».
Still, there is no doubt that the group has achieved a special place in the hearts of fans, becoming an indispensable part of the Hakone Ekiden. These types of traditions demonstrate how the spirit of the event transcends sporting competition, creating unique moments that reflect the creativity and enthusiasm of the fans.
