As previously reported, Studio Eclypse has finally released the first episode of the project “Attack on Titan: Requiem (Shingeki no Kyojin)”, a fan-produced anime adaptation of the well-known fan-manga that covers an alternative ending for Hajime Isayama’s original work.

  • If you have trouble understanding English, the video includes English subtitles, which you can translate within the options of the YouTube player itself.

At its core, “Attack on Titan: Requiem” is a work written by a group of fans that explores another ending to the story, based largely on the “Akatsuki no Requiem” music video by Linked Horizon. Specifically, this doujinshi replaces the final three chapters of the manga (Chapters 137, 138 and 139), presenting a new ending for those who were not satisfied with the original story.

The project, which began in 2021, is scheduled in 4 phases, including a total of ten parts. However, to date only a total of four parts have been publishedwhich obviously means that Studio Eclypse’s anime adaptation doesn’t cover the entirety of the alternate history. Additionally, the studio has gone through previous controversies, such as the cancellation of its “Berserk” remake project, due to They do not request creative licenses from publishers in Japan.

So far no official statement has emerged from Kodansha or the author Hajime Isayama himself. However, the opinions of fans towards this project were immediate:

  • «I thought it was pretty decent (although it was a rewrite using Isayama’s dialogue but twisting it) until I saw the scenes with Eren. I’m sorry, but that character in that episode is not Eren. He doesn’t look anything like Eren. Just a cringe version».
  • «For a fan project, the animation is impressive. However, announcing a specific release date and then leaving the public without updates for more than a day after what was promised is extremely unprofessional.».
  • «As for the fanfic and the material it’s based on, it’s genuinely laughable. It supposedly takes place after chapter 136 rewriting the last 3 chapters, but contains the first 5 pages of chapter 137 unchanged, and more than half of the episode (9 of the 13 minutes) is a recap of chapter 122 with an “old” Eren standing in a threatening manner, hands in his pockets and hair blowing in the wind. The idea of future Eren showing his younger self everything isn’t bad in concept, but it completely destroys the implication that, in canon, Eren has returned to a childlike state to enjoy his freedom for who he is. , and as a symbol of repressing his guilt».
  • «I am an animator of the project, and I wanted to share a few words. I always liked the original ending and didn’t know anything about the doujin or the story. I was only contacted to work on the opening POV scene with the blade, so I have no other connection to the main production. This was also a completely fresh viewing for me, and I really enjoyed the themes and direction. I still prefer the conclusion that Isayama left us in Shingeki no Kyojin, but I think this final project has considerable value».
  • «This is amazing, just seeing an alternative like this is great! Congratulations to everyone who worked on the project».
  • «I was skeptical of these guys, but wow. They showed me that they achieved something good. Let’s see where it goes».
  • «The animation is the only good thing, sorry».
  • «I loved it! I don’t see any disrespect towards Isayama’s work in Shingeki no Kyojin. In any case, if people liked the original ending so much that this bothers them, they can just say that it’s one of the possible outcomes that Eren saw but didn’t choose, and it would fit perfectly with the original narrative without contradicting it».
  • «This shows that if the community comes together, they can achieve wonders. I wish you the best for your future projects.».
  • «Eren was always a boy with an iron will, bravery and passion, who would not hesitate to erase the entire world if it meant that his people and his family were safe. He always had a monster inside, and we know it from the beginning. Eren always keeps fighting no matter the odds, that’s the main point of his character».
  • «A pretty solid narrative to explain why Eren would do what he did. I like it!».
  • «If you saw this and didn’t feel joy in your heart, you’re already dead inside!».
  • «If at least one character from the “group of avengers” dies in the final fight, it would be much better than the ending we had».
  • «It was so good and so much fun! Seeing Eren being true to his character again was healing».
