The manga “Chainsaw Man,” by Tatsuki Fujimoto, continues to establish itself as a work that challenges its readers to think critically, avoiding offering clear answers on how to interpret its scenes. Chapter 189, titled “Heart Pass, Octo Pass,” exemplifies this characteristic by interweaving moments of absurd humor, horror, and symbolism.

In the previous chapter, Yoshida returned to the story as an unexpected ally for Denji and Asa as they attempted to escape the world of the Demon of Old Age. The new chapter takes this conflict to unexpected extremes, highlighting the absurd and grotesque tactics of Denji, who goes so far as to swallow Yoshida's arm and even tries to eat Yoru whole. These scenes, although comic, do not lose the tone of horror characteristic of the work, especially with moments like Yoru's instant agingwhich combines humor and terror in a single shocking image.

A key aspect of the chapter is the revelation that the Demon of Old Age has two distinct personalities, represented by its two heads. The interaction between these adds a new layer of complexity to the character, symbolizing possible reflections on aging and wisdom. The younger head dominates the conversation, while the older one contributes enigmatic phrases that leave open interpretation about how Fujimoto perceives the relationship between youth and old age.

The theme of food remains central to this arc. From the food Denji shared with Barem Bridge, to the literal consumption of the living trees in the Demon of Age's world, the narrative explores how the act of eating affects both the plot and the characters. This symbolism reaches a new level with the Demon of Age's final request: the sacrifice of Fumiko's large intestine, which could be a sign that this arc is coming to an end.

The chapter also surprises with the return of Fumiko, who, after being declared dead in Chapter 186, appears observing her own dying body. In an unexpected twist, Fumiko sacrifices her heart to the Octopus Demon, revealing that Yoshida is not the Octopus Demon as had been speculated, but rather has a contract with him. This event raises intriguing questions about the nature of Fumiko and her demonic contracts.

Fumiko's return has ignited debates among fans. Some believe that her ability to exist in multiple forms could be related to an unknown demon that shares similarities with the Doll Demon, seen in the first part of the story. Others suggest there could be connections to the mysterious Fake Chainsaw Man, whose identity has yet to be revealed.

Meanwhile, the fate of key characters like Kiga remains a mystery, ensuring that the excitement continues in the coming chapters.
