The Japanese Animation Association (AJA) published its annual report on the anime industry, revealing that 2023 was a record year for the sector. According to the report, the total value of the anime industry reached 3.34 trillion yen (approximately $21.27 billion), representing a growth of 14.3% compared to 2022. This is the largest increase since the AJA began record data in 2002.

For the second time since 2002, the foreign market surpassed the domestic one, representing 51.5% of the total value. The international market generated 1.72 trillion yen ($10.94 billion), an increase of 18% from the previous year, while the domestic market grew 10.6% to reach 1.62 trillion yen ($10.32 billion). The main contributors to the global market were North America and Asia, which together generated 72% of the total revenue, amounting to $14.3 billion.

Among the most prominent sectors of the domestic market are streamingwhich grew 51.4% with a value of 250.1 billion yen ($1.58 billion), and merchandise saleswhich represented 700.8 billion yen ($4.45 billion). On the other hand, segments such as music, home video and cinema experienced a drop.

Regarding streaming platforms, Netflix led content revenue anime with 2,070 million dollars, followed by Crunchyroll with 1,160 million and Hulu with 903 million. These services show strong demand for anime, especially in North America and Asia, key regions for the industry.

The report confirms that the anime industry has not only recovered from the effects of the pandemic, but is growing. With an expanding global market, anime is positioned as one of the most important cultural and economic forces in Japan, attracting more and more fans around the world.
