The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise gains a new and ambitious chapter with the launch of the manga Mobile Suit Gundam EIGHT (機動戦士ガンダムエイト), written by Hajime Kamoshida (author of Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai) and illustrated by Hideaki Takagi. The first volume arrived in Japanese bookstores this Wednesday, October 23, by KADOKAWA.
Plot and Setting
Created to celebrate the 24th anniversary of Monthly Gundam Ace magazine, the manga marks the beginning of a completely original story within the Gundam universe. The plot is set in the year CE 2030, following Naomi Subaru, a young man facing a desperate war on Earth.
The narrative rewinds four years to reveal Naomi's past aboard the space exploration vessel Atlantis, where genetically modified young people—known as the "Eighth," the eighth evolution of humanity—are trained as pilots for a dangerous mission in deep space.
Promotion and Launch
The launch also gained attention in Shibuya, where a huge poster of the manga occupied the "Big 8B" advertising space for the Tokyu Den-en-toshi line. Additionally, KADOKAWA launched an official website and a promotional video on YouTube to promote the work.
