Crunchyroll uses ChatGPT to translate subtitles

Crunchyroll says NO to AI in anime - Cover The streaming platform Crunchyroll was the subject of controversy after anime fans noticed a fatal error in the subtitles in one of the new Summer 2025 anime series, Necronomico. Specifically, some dialogues included a mention of ChatGPT, the most popular chatbot of the moment.

"ChatGPT said": The most unusual subtitle error

Screenshot showing 'ChatGPT sagte' in German subtitles of Necronomico anime To be more specific, at minute 19:12 of the first episode we can see how the German subtitles contain a line that begins with: "ChatGPT sagte: Wenn ich die Welt von hier an weiter genießen kann" ("ChatGPT said: Yes, I can continue enjoying the world from here"). It should be noted that this phrase, completely out of context, does not appear in the subtitles in other languages such as English, Spanish or French, which suggests that it is an isolated error in the German translation. Evidence from "ChatGPT said" seems to indicate that the popular artificial intelligence tool was used to generate the corresponding subtitles. Most likely, the person responsible for generating the subtitles simply copied and pasted the text into the translation program. So it seems that their copying and pasting wasn't even done properly.

Problematic subtitles: Not just in German

Crunchyroll says NO to AI in anime - Cover The German subtitle issue went viral, prompting anime fans to check the subtitles in other languages for accuracy. Initially, the English subtitles were found to have translation issues, which sparked criticism. Anime fans have pointed out that, in some cases, the translations seem too literal, affecting the natural understanding of the script. In others, they suspect that some lines may have been automatically generated, reinforcing the theory that AI tools are being used in the localization process.

What Necronomicon and the cosmic horror show are about

The story follows Miko Kurono, a young woman also known as Necronomico, who dreams of becoming a popular live streamer after graduating from high school. Accompanied by her childhood friend, Mayu Mayusaka, and her rival, Kanna Kagurazaka, Miko's life takes an unexpected turn when they receive an invitation to try out a new virtual reality game. This game isn't what it seems. Soon, the protagonists will find themselves caught up in supernatural events that connect with ancient horrors and entities that defy the laws of reality. The anime blends cosmic horror aesthetics with a contemporary young adult narrative, addressing themes such as digital fame, identity, and the perception of reality.
