The official website, as well as the Twitter account / X @5cm_movie_2025 of the upcoming live-action film based on the acclaimed anime 5 Centimeters per Second. Originally directed by Makoto Shinkai, director of Your Name, has revealed this Friday a new 30-second trailer. Along with a second promotional video, of this long-awaited project, in addition to confirming the participation of Ayatake Ezaki as composer.
From director Makoto Shinkai, a new live-action film
The trailer features the first official footage from the live-action film, accompanied by a new performance of Tenmon’s “ Omoide wa Tōku ni Hibi ” theme song, now performed by Ezaki, known for his work on titles such as BELLE and Muteking the Dancing Hero. This new version of the song retains the melancholic essence of the original anime, with a contemporary twist that promises to resonate with audiences. The video includes the tagline: “Takaki-kun. I hope we can see the cherry blossoms again next year.”
As for the cast, Haruto Ueda and Noa Shiroyama will play the young Takaki Tono and Akari Shinohara, respectively, during their childhood. Meanwhile, Hokuto Matsumura, a member of the idol group SixTONES and known for voicing Sota Munakata in Suzume, will play the adult Takaki.

The film is being produced by Spoon, with TOHO distributing. It's directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, who is also a photographer, and the script was written by Ayako Suzuki. In this live-action production, we expect to see the director's personal vision.
The story, based on Makoto Shinkai's original work, follows two young people separated by time and distance as they struggle to hold on to their memories and feelings. The live-action version promises a more intimate and realistic look at this nostalgic tale of love and loss.
The film is scheduled for release in Japanese theaters on October 10, 2025. The first promotional trailer, released earlier, also included one of the most memorable lines from the original film: "How fast do I have to live before I can see you again?", leaving fans excited for what's to come in the live-action film.
After so many years, 5 Centimeters per Second continues to speak to our hearts. And now, listening to that melody again amidst real images and new faces, it's as if those feelings we thought were buried are blooming again, just like cherry blossoms in spring.
This live-action adaptation not only promises to revive one of the most emotional stories in modern anime, but also to remind us how painfully beautiful it is to grow, remember, and let go. "Maybe, just maybe, this time we'll get to see them bloom again."
