A franchise that redefined modern anime

Evangelion x McDonalds collaboration art Originally directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by Gainax, Neon Genesis Evangelion marked a turning point in the medium. What began as a seemingly science fiction mecha series quickly evolved into a work of psychological introspection, philosophical exploration, and social criticism, all wrapped up in a complex narrative and unforgettable visual style. Over the years, Evangelion has expanded into numerous formats, including films, manga, video games, merchandise, and a theatrical remake that began in 2007 with the Rebuild of Evangelion film series. The most recent installment, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, was released in Japanese theaters on March 8, 2021, and marked a close to the story of Shinji Ikari and his complex relationship with humanity, identity, and grief. But that's not all, as the franchise inspired a wide variety of anime and Hollywood films, so its legacy since 1995 is present in the visions of internationally recognized directors and works from all over the world.
